FreedomWorks is proud to announce that our bill of the month for September 2020 is the Separation of Powers Restoration Act (SOPRA),H.R. 7895 and S. 909, introduced by Rep. Kelly Armstrong (R-N.D.) in the House and Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) in the Senate. SOPRA seeks to restore the proper separation of powers by eliminating judicial deference to bureaucratic agencies’ interpretation of laws.

As usual, the attacks on liberty come from the left as well as from the right. While efforts by the left to expand the size and scope of government are more overt, those by the right cannot go unnoticed, either. In the coming weeks, House committees will meet to mark up legislation that could have drastic impacts on our liberties. Here are some things to watch out for in the days and weeks to come.

President Donald Trump suggested on Wednesday that he has the constitutional authority to adjourn Congress. The suggestion has been, unsurprisingly, panned by the media and legal scholars. The Constitution does actually provide some authority here, but the authority has never been used, leaving more questions than answers.

“From the beginning - that is to say, from November 9, 2016 - impeachment has been a cause in search of a trigger, an occasion,” wrote Michael Anton in the Claremont Review of Books, and then he reviews the time and cost of the Mueller report. “It only took two years, $32 million, 19 lawyers, 40 FBI agents and other staff, 2,800 subpoenas, and 500 witnesses for a special counsel to “not establish that members of the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.”
