The Fiscal Cliff Aftermath: How They Voted

After weeks of backroom deals and fruitless negotiations with the White House and the Democrat-controlled Senate, the House and Senate passed a bill to supposedly avert the dreaded “fiscal cliff”. The bill, H.R. 8, was titled “the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012”.

FreedomWorks has been offering a simple solution to the fiscal cliff – keep the promised spending cuts and extend the lower tax rates for everyone.  Instead, the deal Congress and President Obama produced increases taxes on the very individuals and businesses who create the economic growth we so desperately need.  Worse, the deal kicks the spending cuts promised last year down the road, and actually increases federal spending through corporate welfare in the tax code.

FreedomWorks’ President and CEO, Matt Kibbe, put it succinctly: this bill is an epic fail.

Because of this, FreedomWorks opposed H.R. 8 and is scoring NO votes in both the House and Senate as Key Votes in determining our 2012 FreedomFighter Awards.  You can read the House Key Vote notice HERE and the Senate notice HERE.

The Senate voted first, and sadly only 8 Senators voted against it, 5 Republicans (Grassley, Lee, Paul, Rubio, Shelby) and 3 Democrats (Bennett, Carper, Harkin).  You can see the actual roll call vote HERE.

The bill then went to the House, where 167 Representatives voted against it, 16 Democrats and 151 Republicans. However, 85 Republicans joined with a majority of the Democrats in the House to pass this unfortunate bill. You can view how your Representative voted HERE.

Be sure to let your Members of Congress know what you think of their votes, good or bad.  More than ever, it is important that you let them know that you will not tolerate a government whose solution to a fiscal crisis is to spend and tax more.

Tomorrow, January 3rd, at 7 PM EST, FreedomWorks policy experts Dean Clancy, Easton Randall, and Julie Borowski will hold a live online panel discussion on how the fiscal cliff deal happened and what you can do to hold your lawmakers accountable.  You can watch their live broadcast, and ask them questions, HERE.
