The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust, Consumer Policy, and Consumer Rights is meeting this week to discuss whether Google has engaged in anti-competitive business practices through its domination of the online advertising market. Led by Subcommittee Chairman Mike Lee (R-Utah), this hearing should have less of the circus atmosphere than last month’s House hearing on antitrust and big tech, which seemed more like an excuse for both parties to yell at Silicon Valley’s most powerful CEOs for soundbites.

On behalf of our activist community, I urge you to contact your representative and ask him or her to oppose the so-called “For the People Act,” H.R. 1. Introduced by Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.), the For the People Act would deter political free speech and federalize elections. This is one of the more bold-faced assaults on the First Amendment that has come through Congress in quite some time.

On behalf of our activist community, I urge you to contact your representative and ask him or her to support the Preventing IRS Abuse and Protecting Free Speech Act, H.R. 4916, sponsored by Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Ill.). The bill would eliminate the Internal Revenue Service’s Form 990, Schedule B requirement for 501(c) organizations, strengthening the free speech protections of Americans by preventing the IRS from collecting sensitive information about donors, including names and addresses. If the confidential information collected is used improperly by the IRS, it would have a chilling effect on the First Amendment rights to free speech and freedom of association and put the privacy of these donors at risk.

The global community has been rocked by tragedy after tragedy over the last several weeks, but few instances have captured the international spotlight as readily as the recent attacks in London . The international community was quick to offer their support to the beleaguered Britain, but a troubling response came from that nation's own leader.

Freedom of speech ranks chiefly among the civil rights protected by the First Amendment.The founders recognized that a free society must be allowed to grapple with conflicting ideas and viewpoints in order to flourish. Students have been taught the significance of free speech for centuries and American society has counted on educators to ensure the next generation of citizens are well equipped to handle opposing viewpoints. The great tradition of schools and universities being bastions of free speech and civil discourse has been ingrained in the American psyche and upheld by academics and administrators alike, until recently.

Free speech on college campuses has become a significant issue. From the riots at Berkeley over Milo Yiannopoulos, to the use of harassment of Charles Murray at Middlebury College, there have been cases of individuals being silenced to stop them from speaking their thoughts on various issues. However, one pressing issue has been administrative support to silence dissent and prevent opposing viewpoints from being heard. This flies in the face of actually learning, of which colleges are supposed to be a bastion.
