FreedomWorks Drives Comments to the Food and Nutrition Service on Categorical Eligibility for Food Stamps

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The FreedomWorks Foundation’s Regulatory Action Center (RAC) drove 3,700 comments to the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) for its extended comment period on food stamp reforms, accounting for more than 44 percent of comments submitted during the extension. This brings the total number of comments submitted by the RAC to over 7,500 for this docket. Daniel Savickas, FreedomWorks Regulatory Policy Manager, commented:

“Our policymakers have allowed far too much waste, fraud, and abuse in our food stamp program for years. There are no longer meaningful work requirements and the means test leaves much to be desired. FNS and USDA’s push to reform broad-based categorical eligibility is an important step in making sure that those who otherwise wouldn’t qualify for food stamps can’t sap resources from our system. We hope this is just the first step in tightening up and scaling back the program to lift Americans out of government dependence.

“This wave of grassroots support from our activists is both a testament to how long this issue has gone unaddressed and the Regulatory Action Center’s ability to make the regulatory process more accessible for the American people. It is important for them to have a voice when it comes to rules and regulations handed down by unelected officials.”
