FreedomWorks Letter Support Freedom Flat Tax Act

Dear FreedomWorks member,

As one of our million-plus FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to contact your Representative and ask him or her to cosponsor H.R. 1040, the Freedom Flat Tax Act. Introduced by Rep. Burgess (R-TX), the bill would implement an optional flat-rate tax system. The Freedom Flat Tax Act would phase in the flat-tax over a three-year period, with a 19-percent rate for the first two years and a 17-percent rate for the subsequent years. The flat tax will greatly simplify the tax code by eliminating special interest deductions, it is fairer than the current system, and it will generate economic growth.

The United States has one of the most complicated tax codes in the world. The current tax code is filled with tax loopholes that benefit special interests. The Internal Revenue Code is more than three million words. The 2011 edition of the Standard Federal Tax Reporter that explains federal income tax rules is over 71,600 pages long. This document has doubled within the past decade. According to the IRS, the average taxpayer spends 26.5 hours preparing and sending in their taxes. Even IRS commissioner Douglas Shulman admits that he uses a tax preparer to file his own taxes, “I find the tax code complex so I use a preparer.”

Replacing the current messy tax code with a flat rate tax would be a huge improvement. Unlike other flat tax proposals, the Freedom Flat Tax Act would allow individuals and businesses to choose if and when they opt into the system. These Americans would be able to file their taxes in just a few short minutes. It is urgent that we boost our global competitiveness. Dozens of nations have already adopted a single-rate flat tax system. Nearly all of these foreign nations have experienced economic growth and lower unemployment rates after implementing a flat tax.

I urge you to contact your representatives and ask them to cosponsor H.R. 1040, the Freedom Flat Tax Act today. It would fundamentally reform the tax code by creating a fairer and simple system. The Freedom Flat Tax Act would spur economic growth while treating everyone equally.

Sincerely,
Matt Kibbe
