On behalf of FreedomWorks’ activist community, I urge you to contact your senators and ask them to cosponsor the Cost Openness and Spending Transparency (COST) Act, S. 807. Introduced by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) and co-sponsored by Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and James Lankford (R-Okla.), the COST Act would enhance transparency in federal spending.

When historians speak glowingly about the grandeur of the Greeks and of a desire to emulate them, it is more than likely they are talking about Ancient Greece. However, a quick look at the U.S. government’s current leadership, and it would seem they are trying to emulate the Greeks of the last decade, who faced a sovereign debt crisis that crippled their economy. They are heavily resistant to any spending reductions and are running up massive deficits that will eventually circle around to hurt us in the future.

FreedomWorks is proud to announce that our bill of the month for June 2018 is H.Res. 919, sponsored by Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.). The resolution, which has 36 cosponsors, would recognize that our unsustainable national debt poses a true threat to the security of our country. This simple fact is too often ignored by those who claim to be fiscal conservatives, yet use increased defense funding as an excuse to vote for higher and higher spending levels each year.

On behalf of FreedomWorks activists nationwide, I urge you to contact your representative and senators and ask them to support the Spending Cuts to Expired and Unnecessary Programs Act, H.R. 3 and S. 2979, introduced by Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah). This bill would rescind the $15 billion in unobligated budget authorities from previous years that President Trump requested to Congress earlier this week in his proposal to rescind funds as provided for under the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974.

FreedomWorks is proud to recognize Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) as our member of the month for April. Rep. Gosar represents Arizona’s 4th Congressional District, which encompasses a number of Phoenix suburbs, as well as most of the rural western portion of the state. Rep. Gosar was first elected to Congress in 2010, when he defeated Democratic incumbent, Ann Kirkpatrick.

Arguments from Republicans in favor of the omnibus spending package passed by Congress last week are almost all tied together by a common theme: “our military needs this.” The $700 billion appropriated in the Consolidated Appropriations Act, H.R. 1625, for defense spending is argued to be crucial for the security of our country. This mantra resonated loudly among the 145 Republican representatives and 25 Republican senators who cast a “yea” vote for the omnibus last Thursday.

In 2015, Congressman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) started a movement to remove then-Speaker of the House, John Boehner (R-Ohio), from his position. Of this effort, Meadows said, "It's really more about trying to have a conversation on making this place work, where everybody's voice matters, where there's not a punitive culture. Hopefully, we'll have some discussion about that in the days and weeks to come."
