Should Trump Leave Twitter?

On September 8, 1950, President Harry Truman signed the Defense Production Act (DPA) into law. The measure gives the President sweeping authority to seize control of production in the name of national defense. Many have suggested President Trump use this authority to deal with the effects of coronavirus. Thankfully, he has mostly resisted these calls and the private sector has answered the call of duty on its own.

There’s no denying it: we live in a world dominated by technology and the internet. We have witnessed the growth of massive tech companies and have seen how these new industry giants, once thought impossible to exist, drive entire economies to grow. For many people around the world, these innovations may be the difference between upward mobility and abysmal poverty. Despite the importance of expanding the reach of the internet, governments around the world have been pursuing policies that may stifle these amazing developments.

When the FCC began to seriously consider imposing Net Neutrality standards on internet service providers, I had many concerns. I wrote an article at the time called “Rebutting the President on Net Neutrality,” in which I listed my disagreements with a policy that, on the surface, sounds reasonable to many. One of the more controversial points I raised was in response to the “No Blocking” principle, which forbids ISPs from picking and choosing which content they provide access to. I wrote:

It’s a well known fact: the internet is filled with idiots spewing vile, obnoxious, offensive, frequently violent bilge water from the safety of their parents’ basements. Most of these people are harmless blowhards, reveling in their anonymity to say things online that they would never say in person. A few of them are legitimate criminals who mean to harm others, and it’s not always easy to tell the difference.
