Following the announcement of changes to the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act (S. 2123), FreedomWorks CEO Adam Brandon commented:
“In 2007, when Barack Obama was the junior senator from Illinois, Texas, under a Republican governor and Republican-controlled legislature, passed comprehensive justice reforms that promoted public safety, reduced recidivism, and saved taxpayers money. The reforms were so successful that several other conservative states – including Georgia, Mississippi, and South Carolina – followed the responsible model Texas created. Another state, Oklahoma, joined that list just yesterday when Gov. Mary Fallin signed sentencing reforms into law.”
“Republicans in Congress have a great opportunity to reclaim ground on justice reform. The Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act is a step in the right direction. This bill builds off the successes of the more than two dozen states that have enacted justice reform. We strongly urge Majority Leader McConnell to bring the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act to the floor and for Senate Republicans to vote to pass the bill.”
