Georgia is in the news these days, as hundreds of millions of dollars pour into the state for two runoff elections on January 5th that will determine control of the U.S. Senate. The fast-growing, friendly Peach State will get even more attention in the weeks and months ahead.

The campaign season has maintained a dramatic pitch for months, but there are issues related to our senior population not getting much coverage that deserve some focus.

It will take real discipline to fight through the blizzard of misinformation heading our way as the Presidential election gets into full swing. Americans have already suffered through enough coronavirus related challenges, so doomsday predictions of an approaching Social Security collapse are not only inaccurate, but unhelpful.

Gov. Brian Kemp (R-Ga.) has come under intense criticism for taking steps to re-open Georgia. The criticism is peculiar. Reading the reactions on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and elsewhere, one would think that Kemp is forcing businesses to re-open and making consumers begin visiting stores and restaurants. The reality is that it’s up to business owners whether they re-open, and it’s up to consumers whether they leave their homes. It’s a choice, which is the very basis of liberty.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation recently released its annual crime statistics report. There hasn’t been much media coverage of the report, but it does show the violent crime rate in 2018 was at its second-lowest point since this particular crime metric peaked in 1991. Generally, crime rates fell across the board compared to 2017.

On behalf of our activist community, I urge you to contact your representative and senators and ask them to cosponsor the resolution recognizing the national debt as a threat to national security, H.Res. 149 and S.Res. 78. Introduced by Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) and Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.), the resolution offers inconvenient facts about the national debt, the unchecked growth of which will cause severe national security and economic problems for the United States.

Retroactive application of the Fair Sentencing Act (FSA) which became law in 2010 and reduced the sentencing disparity for crack and powder cocaine from 100-to-1 to 18-to-1 has been a hotly contested issue in the criminal justice space. The primary concern from those opposed to retroactivity, including Attorney General Jeff Sessions, is that allowing offenders to petition the court for a review and reduction in their sentence could result in violent criminals being released to the streets, putting public safety at risk.
