Key Vote NO on the Nomination of Neera Tanden for Director of the Office of Management and Budget

On behalf of FreedomWorks activists nationwide, I urge you to contact your senators and ask them to vote NO on confirmation of Neera Tanden as the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Her outward support for government-controlled universal healthcare, complete disregard for any semblance of fiscal sanity, and lavish praise for the Green New Deal have no place at the center of policymaking in an American presidential administration.

The Director of the Office of Management and Budget is among the most economically impactful positions in any modern president’s administration, as the OMB supervises the enactment of the executive branch’s regulatory agenda. While it is reasonable to expect that Biden would appoint a left-leaning OMB director to implement his big-government agenda, Tanden is extremely far to the left of mainstream.

A longtime Democrat party campaign operative, Tanden helped found the Center for American Progress (CAP), which pushes radical economic policy ideas, and has served as its CEO since 2011. In that capacity, she has consistently supported a radically progressive agenda that includes a nigh-socialist government domination of multiple sectors of the economy.

Under Tanden, the Center for American Progress has pushed for a “Medicare Extra for All” plan that essentially expands Medicare into a “public option” to compete against private health coverage. This would lead as inexorably to single-payer, government control of health coverage as passing Bernie Sanders’ Medicare for All, just with an extra step in between.

Tanden has also been open in her praise for the Green New Deal, the absurd, expansive climate proposal advanced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) that FreedomWorks’ Jason Pye likened to the 21st Century’s Communist Manifesto. The Green New Deal amounts to a radical, centrally-planned stimulus program premised on destroying America’s energy production (and its hundreds of thousands of existing, well-paying jobs) to somehow replace it with a zero-emission “clean” economy with absolutely no regard for the devastation it would wreak across the entire economy in the form of unaffordable energy costs.

Of course, the OMB director will also oversee the creation of Biden’s presidential budget proposal, which in theory serves as a guiding document for his party’s spending priorities in Congress as well. Tanden has made clear that little issues such as our nearly $28 trillion national debt “should not stand in the way of bold action” with respect to trillions more in spending in the name of COVID relief. Given that her other economic priorities are not possible to accomplish without unfathomable levels of increased spending, it is reasonable to assume this casual disregard for piling debt on future generations applies far beyond the pandemic.

For these reasons and more, we urge you to contact your Senators and ask them to vote NO on Neera Tanden’s confirmation. FreedomWorks may count this confirmation vote on our 2021 Congressional Scorecard and reserves the right to score any additional motions or other related votes. The scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the FreedomFighter Award, which recognizes Members of the House and Senate who consistently vote to support economic freedom and individual liberty.

Sincerely,
