Key Vote

Key Vote YES on the Paul Amendment to H.R. 6074 to Pay for Coronavirus Emergency Spending

On behalf of FreedomWorks’ activist community, I urge you to contact your senators and ask them to vote YES on Senator Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) amendment to the Coronavirus emergency spending package, H.R. 6074. The amendment would simply rescind unobligated funds for several international outreach and foreign aid programs that have been flagged in the past for being unnecessary and wasting taxpayer dollars, and apply those funds to offset the cost of emergency spending to combat the coronavirus domestically.

The continued spread of the COVID-19 virus worldwide, including now in a number of US states, has justly caused significant public concern. As Congress moves to fund efforts to combat the spread of the disease, however, it should not forget its duty to avoid burdening future generations with unnecessary new deficit spending.

The proposed coronavirus relief package spends nearly $8 billion, and Sen. Paul’s amendment would merely ensure that this amount is offset by rescinding unobligated funding from a number of government programs. These include the East-West Center and the Inter-American Foundation, along with State Department cultural exchange programs and non-health activities of the US Agency for International Development. All of these programs have been noted by fiscal conservatives as wasteful (and sometimes duplicative) uses of taxpayer dollars.

FreedomWorks will score the vote on the Paul Amendment on our 2020 Congressional Scorecard. The scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the FreedomFighter Award, which recognizes members of the House and Senate who consistently vote to support economic freedom and individual liberty.

Sincerely, Adam Brandon, President, FreedomWorks
