Key Vote YES on the Ratepayer Protection Act, H.R. 2042

As one of our over 6.9 million FreedomWorks activists nationwide, I urge you to contact your representative and ask him or her to vote YES on the Ratepayer Protection Act, H.R. 2042. This bill would delay the EPA from implementing some of the most economically destructive emissions standards they have ever devised.

The EPA’s carbon emission regulations have already made it economically unfeasible to build new coal-fired power plants, and their latest proposed emission guidelines threaten to shut down existing plants as well. A reduced energy supply in states which rely heavily upon coal energy naturally leads to increased energy prices. These higher prices are an essentially regressive tax, as all citizens regardless of income levels must use electricity to facilitate most aspects of modern life, and thus lower-income citizens are hit hardest by electricity rate increases.

Because the EPA has reached so far beyond the original scope of the Clean Air Act, even supporters of environmental regulations have suggested that the new power plant regulations may not stand up in court. Thus, the Ratepayer Protection Act would delay the implementation of any new EPA rules regulating carbon emissions until they have passed through judicial review.

In addition, the bill would allow states to opt out of having to implement a state “Clean Power Plan” that state official judge would unduly increase energy prices or reduce the reliability of the state’s energy system. Granting states and individuals a reprieve from the EPA’s latest economically unsustainable regulation is the least Congress can do, especially in a struggling economy.

Please contact your representative and ask that he or she vote YES on the Ratepayer Protection Act, H.R. 2042. FreedomWorks will count the vote on this bill as a Key Vote when calculating our Congressional Scorecard for 2015. The scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the FreedomFighter Award, which recognizes Members of Congress who consistently vote to support economic freedom and individual liberty.

Sincerely,
