Legislator Signs Petition Opposing the Lottery

On Sunday, May 6, State Representative Tracy Walker signed North Carolina Citizens for a Sound Economy’s (CSE) petition opposing a state sponsored lottery. Walker is first term Republican representing Wilkes, Yadkin and Alexander counties in the General Assembly. By signing the petition Walker is adding his name to a growing list of General Assembly members, which includes Republicans and Democrats, who oppose a lottery.

“I was pleased to learn that Representative Walker has decided to vote against a lottery,” said Jonathan Hill, North Carolina CSE Director. “The lottery will be the most important issue debated before the General Assembly this year. It is important to know we are gaining new allies everyday.”

North Carolina CSE opposes a lottery on the grounds that it will only lead to higher taxes and will not help the state address its current budget short fall. Instead of a lottery, the group believes the best way to address budgetary problems is to reduce overall government spending.
