FJ Smith I am younger than you and I am a public school teacher and a parent of 4 children all of whom attend public schools. I am also a conservative Christian who has seen he effects of the government and its decisions on not only on the education of our children but more importantly their home life. I would like to ask a simple question since you seem to think common core is the answer...When I as a parent or even a teacher have a question, comment, or concern about the curriculum who can I address? The school board (LEA)...a joke, the state legislature?..even bigger joke, my federal legislators?...not a chance...common core is run by 2 private groups and CA's is housed in Minnesota...with no possibility of citizen input. The founders NEVER intended for the country to have a federally run school system. each state and even smaller than that LEA was to run their own education system that was responsible to the local citizenry. That is why we have local school board elections. With the centralization of the tax monies and therefor power over our schools to the state and federal government we will continue to see certain agendas driving the common core bus. Those who control the education of the young will control the future. You have to look no further than the green movement and how they have hijacked the public education system to promote junk science for a political end. so back away from the Koolaid.

You asked who to address with a curriculum concern. All curricula is decided by local authorities. They could make their own curriculum or there are over 100 publishers with curricula based on the Common Core Standards. The internet contains thousands of great lesson plan ideas for various Common Core standards.

I don't agree with the green movement or the left leaning ideas that some schools may be pushing. But if Common Core was done away with tomorrow, these same ideas would still be around. There is nothing in the Common Core Standards that promotes the green movement and I have seen nothing in the K-8 Language Arts Standards that I use that is left leaning. If people have objections to a curriculum that is being used, they should target that curriculum - not just randomly shoot at the Common Core Standards. The Common Core Standards have the potential of raising the educational level of many, many students.

I have donated to Educational Research Analysts for many years. They look for biased and untruthful information in textbooks. They point it out to the publishers, so that misinformation can be corrected. I see this as a better way to have our children learning the truth than to do away with excellent standards that actually are not filled with misinformation.

Everyone should read for themselves. Try to find factual, scientific and documented information that supports common core concepts. If no one can find this type of information, then use common sense on this subject.

@FJSmith, I'm not sure of your age, but I am guessing you are younger than me.

People, have you forgotten that this type of education was tried decades ago and failed then?

I've been a strong volunteer in the school and educational system, starting as an assistant director at a childcare center, infants through K. I continued to work with all educational levels, learning and studying new ideas and adaptations of better educational tools that the experts would propose to be adopted. I also continued to be educated on child development of all levels, child development, sociology, psychology, helping children that were challenged in learning and development.

I feel through my experiences over the past 40 plus years, I have a different opinion of the common core agenda. It is not the best program for educating our students. I believe it "dummies" the intelligence already within these young minds and stifles their ability to enhance thinking for themselves. And that may be the idea behind common core education. I can't say why we're going backwards, again.

I've seen common core concepts fail miserably before, and will continue to speak out against this idiotic concept from being accepted. It doesn't matter what your political views are. At least, it shouldn't. The best educational tools for our children should be our common goal. And that is not a common core agenda.

I'm 65. I have taught in Christian schools for many years, so I have been exposed to high standards there. You are completely wrong that it "'dummies' the intelligence." I think you have not read it, or you would have seen all the standards that start with "Analyze," "Evaluate," "Compare and contrast," etc.

You are VERY wrong that it "stifles their ability to enhance thinking for themselves. For example, every grade has at least one "Compare and contrast" standard where they compare characters or two books on the same topic or the story structure, etc. With these type of standards they have to thoroughly understand story (or character or genre, etc.) A and story B. Then they have to compare the two of them. I would not call this stifling their ability to think.

From your comments I would assume that you have not read the Common Core Standards. I would suggest you read over a few grade levels, and then revisit what you have written.

It is obvious that Sam Martin has never read the Common Core Standards and is only making comments on misinformation that he has received. The Common Core Standards cannot be defined as "conformity."

Here is a 9th or 10th grade standard: "Analyze seminal U.S. documents of historical and literary significance (e.g., Washington's Farewell Address, the Gettysburg Address, Roosevelt's Four Freedoms speech, King's 'Letter from Birmingham Jail'), including how they address related themes and concepts." (RI.9-10.9) Does that strike you as "conformity?" How about W.7.1: "Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence…"

He calls it "unseen" yet there were four drafts written for states to see and two drafts for the general public to review. (Almost 10,000 comments were written about the drafts and changes were made due to comments received.)

He says it doesn't take into account individuality. I would suggest he read page 9 of Appendix A. There is also an "Application of Common Core State Standards for English Language Learners"

As a K-8 reading teacher who sees the Common Core Standards as high standards with a possibility to improve the educational abilities of many U. S. students, it saddens me that people who have never read any of the standards are continuing to make baseless accusations which are creating fear in parents. As a conservative I always thought I was on the side of the truth tellers. What Sam Martin is promoting is NOT the truth.

I would encourage him to read through at least one year of the Common Core Standards (how about 12th grade?), and then see what kind of video he can make.

Since there seems to be no way to add a comment back to johnnypat under his comment (below). I am editing my comment to address him: Indiana withdrew from Common Core and wrote some standards of their own. From what I've heard it did not work out too well.

Please see my comments above about Sandra Stotsky. As for no teachers being involved. This is a common myth. states, "The Common Core drafting process relied on teachers and standards experts from across the country. In addition, many state experts came together to create the most thoughtful and transparent process of standard setting. This was only made possible by many states working together." Also read the article "Teachers were not involved in developing the Common Core State Standards say Common Core opponents" ( This article lists many teachers who were involved in the process.

The Common Core standard requiring youngsters to be exposed to 'U.S. documents of historical significance' is great...assuming you can keep it. A quick search on Google turned up (gasp) an instance of Indiana's Common Core standard being altered so that the requirement no longer exists. Here's the link... If the link doesn't work, just do as I did, and google keywords 'analyze seminal U.S. documents stop common core'. The article is on the Hoosiers Against Common Core website.
Also, I'm assuming you are aware that no teachers were involved in the writing of the Common Core standards. Two teachers were brought on board as window dressing, but later both of them refused to sign off on the new standards. Really? Everything coming from Common Core is evil. The government has NO business in education, or the education process. It should be up to parents, kids and teachers. Not the evil teachers unions, the fed government (which is unconstitutional) or even the states. We have seen the dumbing down of our students for over 80 years in this country. That is why the sick twisted Communist freak was elected to president of the US.
