Support the Do Your Job Act, H.R. 1902

On behalf of FreedomWorks’ activist community, I urge you to contact your representative and ask him or her to cosponsor the Do Your Job Act, H.R. 1902, introduced by Rep. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.). This bill would end the practice of “official time,” which currently allows federal employees to perform outside union business while on the clock — and on the taxpayers’ dime.

Federal worker unions are notorious for misusing taxpayer resources, including this practice of using official time to perform union business. A May 2018 report from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) found that federal employees spent 3.6 million official hours in FY 2016 performing official business at a cost of $177.2 million. That was an increase from 3.4 million hours and $162.5 million in FY 2014. Although the number of hours used by federal employees spent less time performing union business in FY 2019, 2.6 million hours at a cost of $134.9 million, one can expect that this number will rise during the Biden administration.

As we said when Rep. Bishop introduced this common sense piece of legislation, “What this bill requires is simple — that federal employees actually do the jobs they were hired to do. Only in Washington could this be a tall order. It is wholly unacceptable that more than $100 million taxpayer dollars are misused year after year to pay federal employees who perform union business while on the clock, at the literal expense of the American public.”

For these reasons, I urge you to contact your representative and ask him or her to cosponsor the Do Your Job Act, H.R. 1902.

Sincerely,
Adam Brandon, President, FreedomWorks
