Support the Don’t Weaponize the IRS Act, S. 1777

On behalf of FreedomWorks’ activist community, I urge you to contact your senators and ask them to cosponsor the Don’t Weaponize the IRS Act, S. 1777, introduced by Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.). This bill would protect free speech and shield Americans from being targeted due to their political beliefs by codifying the May 2020 Treasury Department rule that eliminated the requirement of 501(c)(4) organizations to disclose donors’ personal information to the IRS.

As FreedomWorks Foundation said of this Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requirement which existed prior to the May 2020 rule, upon our activists filing more than 3,100 comments in suppor
t of its repeal, “Patriotic Americans across the country and across the political spectrum donate proudly to the causes they care about. Not a single one of them should have to be afraid of harassment because their identities and locations were made public. There is no tax reason the IRS needs the donor information for 501(c)(4) organizations.”

Now, Democrats are seeking to reverse this common-sense policy and once again open up Americans to political targeting by the federal government through the IRS via H.R. 1 and S. 1, the so-called “For the People” Act. Make no mistake that what they seek is a return to the Obama-era IRS, where for more than two years, the IRS systematically targeted Americans based on their political viewpoints. This should never be allowed to happen again.

For these reasons, I urge you to contact your senators and ask them to cosponsor the Don’t Weaponize the IRS Act, S. 1777.

Sincerely,
Adam Brandon, President, FreedomWorks
