Texas School Choice Bill Vote Monday Morning

This week, there is a chance to bring greater safety and opportunity to Texas schools, and we urgently need your help today, Sunday May 22, and tomorrow morning. The Texas legislature is in session this afternoon and it is appropriate to take action.

Reformers in the Texas legislature are trying to pass Senate Bill 422 to create a pilot school choice program for children who are victims of school violence, who are economically disadvantaged, or who require special education. This bill would give these students the option to attend a public or private school of their choice in seven inner-city school districts in Texas’s five largest counties.

Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, and Speaker Tom Craddick all strongly support this legislation to allow children who are victims of school violence to go to a safe school, and for learning and physically disabled children to choose the school which best meets their needs. Unfortunately, the usual opponents of school reform are attacking Senate Bill 422, and this important legislation hangs in the balance today.

For too long, teachers’ unions and the education bureaucracy have kept some kids trapped in unsafe or failing schools. Let’s give these children a lifeline to better opportunity. Senate Bill 422 is up for consideration Monday morning, and your Representatives are working today. It is important that your Representative hear from you today.

Please your Texas State Representative hear from you today and urge him/her to support Senate Bill 422.

Thanks in advance for taking action and calling your Representative!
