URGENT ACTION NEEDED... RNC Is Pushing to Eliminate Grassroots Influence

By Shane Wright and Jim Hoft

Yesterday Michael Duncan reported at Freedom Works on a brewing fight in the rules committee of the RNC. Essentially the Rules Committee is trying to disenfranchise grassroots groups by allowing the party nominee to dismiss delegates and silence opposition.

Buzz Feed explained this new rule:

The Republican National Convention Rules Committee voted 63-38 to approve a new rule allowing granting the Republican National Committee — and Mitt Romney — sweeping new powers to amend the governing document of the GOP.

The move came at the encouragement of Mitt Romney supporters on the committee, including Romney's top lawyer Ben Ginsberg, who stressed that it would grant "flexibility" to Romney and the committee to adapt to changing political environments. The rule allows the RNC to amend the party's rules without a vote by the full Republican National Convention. And it offers the Republican Establishment a new tool to keep at b[a]y Tea Party initiatives that threaten to embarrass or contradict party leadership and stray from a planned message.

The ramifications for grassroots activist and state GOP’s are vast. This rule change would allow a candidate to select his or her own delegates, essentially the nominee would get to choose those who nominate him instead of the states. This proposed rule change is starting to sound more like an Obama executive order.

Tom Washington, who is speaking on his own accord but serves as the Assistant Treasurer for the Republican Party of Texas, told us, “If Romney, or any other candidate can select their own delegates the entire convention process will have been hijacked and eliminate the grassroots influence.”

Another source, Cathie Adams, the former chair of the Republican Party of Texas, told us that this could be destined to floor fight. Adams added, "We want the freedom to elect our own delegates. It's motivated by the grassroots influence."Adams also said Romney's attorney may be working to influence members of the rules committee.

The RNC is trying to pass an amendment to RNC Rule 12 that would allow the RNC Committee to amend the rules. In the future, if the grassroots is able to influence the convention process and RNC leadership is displeased, they will have a contingency plan where they can reconvene and with a three-fourths majority to rewrite the rules without the influence of any state party, grassroots organization or delegate.

Has anyone actually seen a redline hardcopy of these amendments? I've searched online and nothing official or unofficial has been posted publically. I have to wonder if the delegates have seen these amendments in writing? If not, the current rules remain valid…

Either way, it does demonstrate the type of "leadership" that will no doubt be displayed by Mitt Romney if elected president (establishment, top-down). It's also clear the republican establishment does not want Tea Party influence, and rules can be written, or rewritten, by those in position, in any way they choose, for good or bad. One salient point remains fixed, and that is each delegate can still vote his or her conscience in November!

lil kremer

Bottom Line: GOP establishment is not to be trusted with our interests and voices. I'm sorry to see Paul Ryan is not opposing this abuse of power and trust.

Linda Dollyhigh

Linda-Mt. Airy NC. I got through to my NC # but the lady didn't have time for anything except "for or against". I did have time to tell her "the Tea Party could stay at home in November".

kent penney

Kent in NY. I called our office and demanded they Not pass this amendment. If they do, they will no longer get my vote.

Heidi Hofacker

I never drempt that the Republican party could do anything that would cause me to sit out this election-(I do believe this is the most important election of my lifetime)....and I have never missed a national election. This effort to silence "We the People" in the process is so disconcerting that I would consider this a deal breaker. The fact this is being promulgated by someone directly related to Romney is even more disturbing. The Republican Party needs better understand this will be suicide. They are still on "probation" with me from the big government Bush years.

Linda Dollyhigh

I told my rep (even though she said she only had time for "for or against" that "the Tea Party could stay at home in November. I am a precinct chair for the Repubs. IF this goes through I may withdraw.

David Stiles

It is nonsense like this that fans the flames of 3rd Partyism. Mark Steyn said it best-and he may have been quoting someone else-when he said "Republicans never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity". Instead of uniting to defeat Obama, the "Establishment" Republicans, aka RINOs, choose to ostracize that very wing of the Party that can bring it victory in November: the Conservative, intellectually honest Tea Party.

Ken Roar

If they don't do an about face, Obama is as good as re-elected. I refuse to vote for those who are unethical and oppose freedom and the people. I may have to vote the libertarian ticket this November. Don't let this happen!

Bill Wilkinson

The intentions of the change in rules regarding delegate selection are irrelevant. The consequences are clear. If grassroots conservatives or Ron Paul supporters are denied their voice in the Republican Party, they will look elsewhere. Enough will look at a third party run, thus damaging the Republican Party in guaranteeing a split vote, ensuring Democratic rule until either the Republican Party returned to its principles or didn’t, died and a third party was established. About a forty year process. This isn’t a threat against the Republican establishment, it’s the reality of what individuals passionately concerned about America would be incentivized to do if squeezed out of the Republican Party. Party members interested in quieting the grassroots for their own vision of the party ought to consider this. Nobody will win. Play fair.

A "third" (actually second party as the Democrats & Republicans are just 2 wings of the Big Government Party) party is already established. Gary Johnson & the Libertarian Party are already on the ballot in all 50 states.

Dr. Paul ran on their ticket in 1988. The Republicans have made it clear they want an exclusive club. Any Republican grass-roots effort will get infiltrated the fringe religious extremists.

The best thing about Libertarians is that they are quick to out other Libertarians for breach of the basic principles of self-ownership and non-initiation of force or fraud.

Thank you for raising awareness on this issue. I find it highly disturbing that the supporters of this candidate are willing to put forward a rule that would subvert the entire primary process. I can think of no better way for Romney to ensure that he loses a close election - not to mention imperil the entire future of the GOP - than moving forward with this. It is the delegates who nominate the candidate, not the candidate who selects delegates and so it should remain.

Vicki Smith

Sorry, my previous message was supposed to be a general comment. (but accidentally listed under Lyle Land's comment). This is my first time posting. Since I couldn't get through to the office here in Arizona, I sent e-mail to the Republican National Committee. I suggest everyone else send e-mails, try Facebook or twitter to your representatives/senators in the meantime while we try to make calls again tomorrow.

Where are the Washington State Rules Committee Delegates? I would like to call but they are not listed and I cannot find the information on the Internet. Does anyone know how to find the information? I call the above number and was told our Washington State leader is opposed to the rule and it encouraging our delegates to vote against the rule.

Thanks for bringing this travesty to a higher level of awareness. I am glad to see FreedomWorks take up the gauntlet on this problem, as it severely undercuts everything FreedomWorks has been doing through the grassroots arena.

I can assure you that our delegation from Texas and numerous activists of all flavors, Ron Paul supporters, Tea Party activists, and conservative GOP grassroots activists are completely aligned against this establishment power grab.

This is unbelieveably tone deaf from the Romney campaign. At a time that the party needs to be totally unified in it's efforts to put this Republic back on the correct path, Romney's people have created a massive internal civil war within the GOP at the worst possible time.

I just tried the Arizona number and the mailbox is full and nobody answered the phone. Maybe that's a good sign that many grassroots activists have already called. Nonetheless, we must stand firm on this. I suggest that we try again in the morning and e-mail, twitter, or Facebook our Representatives and Senators in the meantime. I am an avid supporter of the Romney/Ryan ticket but this is B.S. They must not realize that we outnumber them (or maybe they do).

D Williams

I have donated to FreedomWorks because of the strides that were being made. The thought that the RNC was actually listening to grass roots was encouragement beyond measure. IF they try to pull this nonsense, they WILL NOT like the response.

This is what they want.. I will vote the ticket in November.. In FEBRUARY, however, I will begin with everything I have, to convince folks in my area to seriously and quickly consider doing what it takes to join the TEA Party groups and Freedom Works, and take our marbles somewhere where our likes, (and the will of the people) are appreciated.
An act of that sort will not change the minds of those who initiated this business. It will create a place where freedom, liberty and Constitution loving people are welcome.
Before the 92 elections, I parted ways with the Democrat Party. As with so many of that time, "I didn't leave the Democrat Party. The Democrat Party left me". In 94, the Dems passed the gun bans and Gingrich was elected as Speaker. What happened after that left us all better off, till 2008, when days as dark as any in the history of our nation, since any of us were born.
Ron Paul is as wrong as Barack Obama, and will put us in as much jeopardy internationally as Obama has done. "Ron Paul is NOT the answer"..
I do not know what may come of our country and our strangulated Lady Liberty. I do know that what the GOP has declared in the last two days in the Rules Committee has made it as clear as firing the phone bank did a half a dozen years or so ago. The "Established Power in the GOP" does not want to hear what we have to say. We are treated equally shamefully as the DNC treats their acolytes. Like a mushroom farmer, they keep us in the dark and feed us manure.
I've had enough now..
This election is what it is, and any of the very limited funds I may have to donate to "victory" will go to the NRA-ILA, Freedom Works or the TEA Party. I'm on a fixed income. No contribution I would ever afford to make would ever be considered as "a voice" in American Politics. Nonetheless, I WILL NO LONGER SIMPLY ACCEPT BEING TREATED OR REGARDED IN THIS WAY.
Yes, I will vote in November, for as many GOP candidates as are available to vote for, unless they are not Pro-Life or Pro-(me keeping my)-Guns.
I did not donate my life to the availability to the free supply of oil, when called upon to do so. I did donate my ready ambulation and ability to feed myself by my own labor. I was blessed by it in the love that God gave to me, and I still am..
In my disability, I am assumed to have accepted that I am a slave, I have not succumbed to such a notion. I am helpless to control what the government does to me, but my right to keep and bear arms in the 2nd Amendment, and the overarching Grace of God, I am not defenseless. I will not be a slave, and if demanded, I will not be imprisoned in my rebellion to the yolk of a liberty consuming master.

These are my thoughts.

I ask you to consider, that in the light of the Rules Committee actions (coup) and the actions of John Sununu and the Romney Campaign that have stripped the GOP of the very ability to acknowledge our voice in determining our choice for a Presidential candidate, we depart the GOP that first turned it's back on us, and build our future ourselves, without the shepherding of those who would lead us where we have plainly and repetitively told them that we do not wish to go..
May God bless the Republic, and forgive us for allowing such as has taken place to ever have crept into the land of His blessing.

May our nation survive to see a better day..
