Virginia 10th Amendment Rally Draws 2,400 to the Capitol Grounds

Yesterday, I joined a record-breaking Lobby Day crowd of Virginians at the steps of the bell tower on Richmond's Capitol Grounds. I had the privilege to be one of the speakers who addressed the gathering on topics like the Tenth Amendment and its fundamental importance in our American system of divided sovereignty.

They didn't need the lesson.

Only at an event like that could Thomas Jefferson's Kentucky Resolutions be good for applause lines, yet the historically-astute crowd erupted when, after reading a portion of his 1798 treatise, I declared

"We the People, through the actions of our sovereign state governments, have the same power to determine the constitutionality of federal laws as the Supreme Court now claims exclusively for itself!"

We were there to celebrate a reawakening of Virginians to their constitutional responsibilities; in particular the responsibility to hold state legislators accountable. Those elected officials who prove themselves unwilling or unable to defend liberty from federal encroachment are not worthy to hold office in our state.

Fortunately, we have leaders like our new Attorney General, Ken Cuccinelli, who, in front of a bevy of reporters, praised Delegate Bob Marshall's HB10 (to nullify the individual mandate in ObamaCare). That bill now has 24 cosponsors in the House of Delegates, including the Speaker himself.

After the rally ended, hundreds of people swarmed up to the General Assembly building to lobby their legislators in support of the Virginia Health Care and Firearms Freedom Acts. The line to get through security stretched across the street and down the block. Freedom is on the march!
