FreedomWorks, Rand Paul, and Ken Cuccinelli have filed a class action lawsuit against President Obama and a host of other people involved in the National Security Agency (NSA) domestic spying program. “FreedomWorks is participating in this suit on behalf of our community of 6 million citizens nationwide, along with any American who has a phone,” FreedomWorks President Kibbe said at the press conference. “If you use a phone, you should care about this case.”
Last summer, it was revealed that the federal government has been spying on U.S. citizens through a top-secret NSA program. The lawsuit will specifically address the government collecting and storing “metadata” from all Americans’ telephone conversations. Metadata can potentially reveal a lot about the callers—it includes information on what kind of phone is being used, phone numbers, the time, the duration of the call, the location, and the cellular towers used to transmit the calls. Doesn't this sound like a big government straight out of a dystopian novel?
The intrusive actions of the federal government are clear violations of our constitutional rights. The 4th amendment is pretty clear: government cannot perform unreasonable searches and seizures. This means that the government must obtain a warrant from a judge before searching through any private belongings or conversations. Period.
Americans from across the political spectrum are outraged that the NSA is indiscriminately spying on innocent people without a warrant. This is not a right vs. left issue. A few weeks ago, FreedomWorks was involved with the Day We Fight Back. This day of action bought together the American Civil Liberties Union, Demand Progress, the Libertarian Party, FreedomWorks, and a wide array of organizations to fight back against out of control government spying. We may not agree on every single issue, but we all believe that privacy should be protected.
As you may imagine, taking the NSA to court is no easy task. We’d like all the support that we can get. Our goals are to get the government to admit their wrongdoing—and for them to stop spying on innocent people!
