As one of over 6.9 million FreedomWorks activists nationwide, I urge you to call your representative and senators and demand that they vote against the disastrous “Bipartisan Budget Act”. Because this bill not only spends well in excess of the budget caps but also suspends the debt ceiling without any major spending reforms, this vote will be weighted double on our Online Congressional Scorecard.

The ever-shifting horizon on when the federal government is scheduled to reach its borrowing limit has most recently been set at November 3rd, just days after John Boehner is scheduled to resign his office. What this means is that no new leadership will save us from yet another increase in the debt ceiling, although there will always be a principled few who will want to resist.

President Barack Obama drew a line in the sand on budget caps during his weekly address to the country. Citing the latest employment report to argue that the economy has improved, he threatened to veto any budget produced by the Republican-controlled Congress that keeps spending in check.

Congress is coming back to town, and that means it’s time to hide our wallets. If the leadership of both parties are left to their own devices, by the end of September the government’s spending will have increased once again. This outcome is by no means inevitable; indeed, it shouldn’t even be possible after the Republicans took solid control of both the House and Senate. It will be up to those principled leaders who do care about the financial peril our nation faces to put the brakes on any effort to speed up the government’s spending.

Today, astonishingly, 281 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives – including 100 Republicans – voted to increase the government’s autopilot “mandatory” spending. Tucking even more new spending into the “non-discretionary” category in order to avoid budget constraints is a dangerous precedent – one which no fiscal conservative should ever support.

The Senate is expected to spend the bulk of the upcoming week on their edition of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the bill that outlines what Congress is allowed to spend on most aspects of defense for Fiscal Year 2014.  This includes the DoD, some of the Dept. of Energy, Veterans' Affairs, and "Overseas Contingency Operations" (OCO) spending, which is funding for the drawdown in Afghanistan.
