Leadership is Needed to Solve the Budget Challenges

North Carolina’s Senate and House leadership are devising a scheme threatening our state’s most vulnerable citizens to help these politicians raise taxes. We need leadership to solve our budget challenges, not threats.

The real choice we are faced with today is how are we spending the additional $500 million in new revenue. Will we use this to protect human services and protect our children, or will we use $500 million to create new government spending?

We agree with Senate President Pro Tem Marc Basnight when he says, “We’ve all been through this: That you don’t take away money you’ve already obligated. If you’re going to take money, go to the highway department. There is a billion dollars…” (News & Observer, 07-19-01)

He is right North Carolina has the money! We do not need to raise taxes or scare our most vulnerable citizens to solve our budget challenges.

Stop the rhetoric and solve the budget problem. You have the money!

North Carolina Citizens for a Sound Economy on behalf of the taxpayers of North Carolina calls on the General Assembly’s leadership to find a way not to raise taxes on the hardworking people of North Carolina. We deserve leaders who have the courage and leadership to positively and effectively work toward getting this budget and spending problem under control.
