Everyone in Congress Wants to Tackle the Debt: Here's How

Thanks to the historic tax reform passed by congressional Republicans at the end of last year, the economy is booming. Even better, the job market is exploding, and fewer workers are receiving unemployment benefits than at any point during the last 44 years.

Departing GOP Lawmakers Can Still Rack Up Victories in 2018

Rep. Darrell Issa’s (R-Calif.) retirement announcement marks another instance of a growing trend. More and more Republican lawmakers are retiring after this legislative session — some to seek higher office at the federal and state level, some to private-sector ventures, and some simply out of a desire to be at home and with their families.

Proposed Constitutional Amendments in the 115th Congress to Balance the Federal Budget

The total debt in the United States has continually risen, year after year, increasing almost fourfold since the start of the 21st century. What was a total debt of $5.75 trillion in January of 2000 is now over $20.45 trillion. This number has risen due to excessive government spending, with few mechanisms to hold it accountable otherwise.

Ignore The Endless Talk Of Doom, Budget Deficits Really Don't Matter

U.S. federal debt added up to $908 billion in 1980, but today, nearly 40 years later, the number comes in around $20 trillion. That the amount owed by U.S. taxpayers has soared over twenty-fold would, in a static world, correlate with a huge increase in borrowing costs for the U.S. Treasury.

Congress Must Support a New Round of BRAC

As passed by the House last month, the National Defense Authorization Act, H.R. 2810, contains language that prohibits a new round of Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC). An amendment offered by Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Calif.) to strike this section of the bill failed by a vote of 175 to 248.

Puerto Rico Needs Drastic Financial Reform, and Fast

Puerto Rico is in a financial free-fall, and the federal government is actively trying to prevent a total economic meltdown. Recently, legislation was introduced in the House by the Natural Resources Committee to help resolve Puerto Rico’s financial crisis, an effort that is well-intentioned and far superior to any taxpayer bailout of the territory. There are concerns, however, that still need to be addressed before the bill should go forward.
