CSE Defeats Sales Tax but Others Still Loom

Thanks to an all-out effort by Oregon CSE activists last week, a sales tax proposal was successfully killed for this session. Activists called, wrote, and emailed state legislators, in addition to testifying at open hearings to express their opposition to the sales tax. This is a great victory for all Oregonians and everyone at CSE would like to thank all those activists that participated in the effort. But our work is far from over.

Despite the victory, liberal lawmakers have proposed a number of other bills that will increase existing taxes. Following the lead of labor unions, they seek to increase tax revenues by eliminating or reducing deductions on income taxes. The largest deductions to be reduced or eliminated are the personal exemption, mortgage interest, and charitable deductions. In total, these will negatively affect 80% of taxpayers in the state.

Despite increased revenue this year and some $240 million in federal bailout money, some lawmakers in the state legislature want to continue to increase taxes on Oregonians. This is unacceptable! Oregon doesn’t have a revenue problem, it has a spending problem.

Take Action

Thanks to you, CSE beat the sales tax scheme, but it will take more hard work to successfully counter the latest efforts of tax-and-spend politicians in Oregon!
