Democracy and Power 113: Vote Trading“I’ll vote for your legislation, if you’ll vote for mine.” This is never said in public, but occurs constantly. Regularly, our leadership requests legislation, and a politician agrees to the request if our leadership includes his project. Politicians trade votes for their respective benefit, which is seldom for the benefit of most Americans.

If you don’t support the Farm Bill, then you must hate farmers or food stamp recipients, right?  Actually, this is not the case, at all; in reality, if you do not support the Farm Bill, you are one of the Americans who are able to spot a waste of taxpayer money when he or she sees it.  The shallow loss program in this year’s Farm Bill is hardly a better alternative to the previous direct payment plan.  Under the shallow loss program, if farming profits fall below 90% of the previous five year’s average, taxpayers will be responsible for covering the difference.  Currentl

On June 3rd, the Senate will resume deliberations on the nearly $1 trillion dollar “Farm” bill. However, the majority of the “farm” bill does not actually deal with agriculture or farms.  In fact, food and nutrition assistance programs (food stamps) such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) comprise roughly 80% of the farm bill, costing tens of billions of dollars.

Over the past decade or so, there has been significant growth in the powers delegated to the unelected heads of regulatory agencies, colloquially known as “czars.” At last count, the Obama Administration has amassed 45 of these positions, more than any of his predecessors and all without the accountability of elected office.

The Senate is considering the Farm Bill this week, a nearly-trillion-dollar bundle of corporate welfare, wasteful spending, and food stamps.  FreedomWorks has issued a Key Vote NO against this bill.However, there are a number of amendments that are being offered to the Farm Bill that would achieve significant, measurable reforms.FreedomWorks encourages Senators to vote YES on all of the following amendments. Any of these amendments (or those similar) that come up for a vote may be scored on FreedomWorks' scorecard for 2013.
