On September 8, 1950, President Harry Truman signed the Defense Production Act (DPA) into law. The measure gives the President sweeping authority to seize control of production in the name of national defense. Many have suggested President Trump use this authority to deal with the effects of coronavirus. Thankfully, he has mostly resisted these calls and the private sector has answered the call of duty on its own.
