On behalf of FreedomWorks’ activist community, I urge you to contact your representative and senators and ask them to cosponsor the Higher Education Reform and Opportunity (HERO) Act, H.R. 4098 and S. 2339. Introduced by Rep. Francis Rooney (R-Fla.) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), the HERO Act would allow states to tailor education to the unique needs of students, by developing their own systems for accrediting educational institutions instead of being restricted fully by the federal Department of Education.

FreedomWorks’ activist-chosen dumpster fires of the month for July 2019 are the Student Debt Cancellation Act, H.R. 3448, introduced by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and the College for All Act, S. 1947, introduced by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). Both of these pieces of legislation would seek to erase all federal student loan debt and completely restructure the higher education system, forcing unwitting taxpayers to foot the $2.2 trillion bill.

FreedomWorks Foundation's Regulatory Action Center (RAC) submitted comments to the Department of Education supporting accreditation reform. An excerpt of the comments can be found below, and the full comments can be found in the attachment at the bottom of this article:

It’s quite telling that the cover of the federal budget for the 2017 fiscal year portrays snow-capped mountains, because the proposals read like a liberal wish list being sent to Santa’s workshop. Despite the absurd recommendations by President Obama, however, the enactment of such policies would have devastating consequences for years to come.

This month the US Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions held a hearing on the Higher Education Act, which was originally passed in 1965. The primary topic for the duration of the two hour hearing was the collection and dissemination of data from colleges and universities.

Universities have long been considered hotbeds of liberalism. Radical protests, dreary PC speech codes, far-left professors and outright attacks on conservatism are not just common but expected. Academia has become so stridently left-wing, faculty views even a single ember of center-right thought as a dangerous wildfire.

In this month's State of the Union Address the president put forth a plan to make college tuition more affordable. The proposal was met with praise in most quarters on the left, but surprisingly little attention from the right.

Student loan debt has risen to approximately $1 trillion, surpassing America's credit card debt. In the midst of prolonged economic downturn, the cost of higher education continues to creep upwards. In an effort to mitigate the looming damage of a deflated higher education bubble, Texas Governor, Rick Perry, asked Texas colleges to come up with a way to provide a $10,000 college degree.  It's been a year since Governor Perry issued the charge and several colleges have risen to the challenge.
