Washington State Tax Fact #1: I-884 would give Washington the highest sales tax in the country.

I-884 would raise the sales tax from 6.5 percent to 7.5 percent—a large 15.4% increase in the state sales tax rate, giving Washington the highest sales taxes in the nation.

Washington State is already tied with Nevada and Minnesota for the fifth highest sales tax burden of any state in the country, but will take the top spot as the state with the worst sales tax if I-884 passes. Such a dubious ranking will encourage Washington’s shoppers to go to nearby Oregon, where there is no sales tax, or the internet, costing the state many jobs.

Proponents of the I-884 tax hike like to downplay the size of the increase calling it a “one penny” tax hike. But that’s a penny on every dollar spent, totaling a hardly negligible burden of a $1 billion tax hike on the workers of Washington.
