TEXAS TELECOM UPDATE: HB 789 Will Create Jobs and Growth

Dear FreedomWorks Member,

First, let me thank you for all of your hard work on this issue. The hundreds of emails, letters, faxes, and phone calls from Texas FreedomWorks activists like you urging legislators to remove unnecessary regulatory barriers in the telecommunications industry have really paid off.

Thanks largely to your efforts, legislation that was headed in the wrong direction just last week is now back on track. If we can keep the pressure up it looks like Texas will remain a national leader in telecom, and that means more jobs and a stronger economy.

Recently, Texas House Regulated Industries Committee Chairman Phil King introduced HB 789, which creates a competitive telecommunications market. The bill updates archaic laws and regulations that have hurt job creation and hampered growth in this important sector of the Texas economy. The new legislation establishes a competitive and open market for telecommunications that expands consumer choice and creates incentives to invest in the infrastructure required to bring these new technologies to consumers.

It’s important we recognize the efforts of Chairman King and the House Regulated Industries Committee in putting forward this pro-growth, pro-competition legislation. But at the same time, we can’t afford to rest on our laurels. In fact the bill could be even stronger if it allowed the Texas Infrastructure fund to expire.

This battle is far from over and with things stalling in the Senate, your voice in this debate is more important than ever.
