FreedomWorks Key Votes No on Kennedy-Collins Amendment

Dear Senator:

On behalf of more than 800,000 FreedomWorks members nationwide, I write to urge you to VOTE NO on the Kennedy-Collins amendment to the 2007 budget resolution. This amendment would increase the discretionary spending cap by $6.3 billion while raising taxes on businesses. The Senate must reject these anti-growth tax-and-spend policies.

The voters have had enough with Congress’s run away spending, and FreedomWorks stands with them in support of fiscal restraint. The budget already stands at $2.77 trillion, replete with pork such as therapeutic horseback riding programs and funds to combat teen “goth” culture, along with $55 million for International Polar Year. The Kennedy-Collins amendment moves us further down this fiscally irresponsible road.

As it stands right now, the discretionary spending cap for the 2007 budget is at $873 billion. The cap, though admittedly very large, nonetheless exists to make sure that Congress restrains its spending according to minimal guidelines. The budget was designed to cut non-security discretionary spending by $2.2 billion. Yet, Senator Edward Kennedy (D – MA) and Senator Susan Collins (R – ME) want to increase the spending cap by another $6.3 billion to fund federal education programs. Setting aside the appropriate role of the federal government in education, the amendment would defeat whatever meager reductions the current budget currently tries to make.

FreedomWorks will count your vote on the Kennedy-Collins amendment as a KEY VOTE when calculating the FreedomWorks Economic Scorecard. The FreedomWorks Economic Scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the Jefferson Award, which recognizes Senators with voting records that support economic freedom.

Sincerely,
