Some of the largest expansions of government power and unconstitutional abuses have come during times of pressing crises, not unlike the coronavirus. The government routinely tries to paper over these abuses by saying they are temporary, and that anyone who resists is guilty of making the present crisis worse. It’s the same story over and over again.
On behalf of FreedomWorks’ activist community, I urge you to contact your representative and ask him or her to cosponsor legislation to terminate the Department of Education, H.R. 899. Introduced by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), this bill would do one simple thing -- hand matters of education back to those with whom they belong: state and local communities.
Who should be responsible for your child’s education: you, or the government? It’s a debate that has been raging for centuries, but it is only recently that government control of education has become so intrusive as to inspire real backlash. The alternative education movement in America has been around for decades, but these days it seems to really be picking up steam, and it is not a stretch to attribute at least some of its rise in popularity to the ever-lengthening arm of the government education bureaucracy.
This Independence Day, millions of Americans will gather to watch fireworks, grill some burgers and dogs, and celebrate the hard-fought freedoms of our forefathers. But in the heady rush of red, white, and blue patriotism, it’s important to remember what those freedoms actually mean, and to examine whether they still remain intact today.
Here at FreedomWorks, we….well, we know that freedom works. We know that, if the federal government would leave us alone and let market forces work, the American people would flourish and thrive. Whether it's the NSA revelations, the IRS scandal, or the imposing takeover of our health care system, Americans are seeing a grand expansion of federal control.
I'm not sure what it is about this administration, but they're simply not satisfied with the existing federal construct. Undeterred by the recent Supreme Court ruling which found part of the Voting Rights Act unconstitutional, Holder's DOJ announced yesterday that Texas is back in the crosshairs.
Once upon a time in America, there was a family. This family worked hard for what they earned, and they were able to purchase the latest widget. They loved their widget! One day, someone came along and forced them to hand over the widget. This person used said widget for profit for a year, then returned it to the hardworking family. The family rejoiced at the return of the widget, thanked the person who had taken it from them, and they all lived happily ever after.
Leave it to the Lone Star State to put up a fight. Despite unprecedented federal government expansion, Texas is determined to flex their Constitutionally granted state powers. At the helm is Governor Perry, known for his love of the tenth amendment.
If you ever want to lose an audience, start talking federalism. Sure, a few of us policy geeks love this foundational principle of American polity but the other 97.4 percent closes the browser window faster than you can say “Alexis de Tocqueville.”
