September Unemployment Metrics

We are arguably in the midst of an economic downturn the likes of which our country has not seen in decades.  This past month, the economy posted some horrific unemployment numbers and recorded some new highs and lows.  The House Republican Conference (HRC), chaired by Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), has recently released its latest unemployment fact sheet which reveals the numbers behind some of these troubling trends.

Everyday 14,000 Americans Lose Their Coverage, Really?

On September 9, 2009 Barack Obama gave a speech on health care before a Joint Session of Congress in which he said that “every day, 14,000 Americans lose their coverage.”  In an email to its members on August 27, 2009 promoting vigils for those who can’t afford health insurance, MoveOn cited the same statistic of 14,000 people losing their coverage every day.  From where did this figure come and is it accurate?  MoveOn cites a study done by the Center for American Progress (CAP), a liberal think tank, in February of 2009 as the source of the statistic.

July’s minimum wage increase could effect college attendance

Minimum wage is set to increase from $6.55 an hour to $7.25 on July 24th. The Wall Street Journal article “Mandating Unemployment, congress prepares to kill more jobs”, from July 13, 2009, raises the question of who this raise will benefit, and who it will hurt. According to the article, David Neumark, an economist from University of California, Irvine, believes “the 70-cent per-hour minimum wage hike this month would kill ‘about 300,000 jobs for those between the ages of 16-24’”.  As of June, 2009, 24% of American teens are already unemployed.

Just how bad is the economy? A FreedomWorks activist sounds off.

I received an excellent email this morning from a FreedomWorks activist in response to a call to action that was sent yesterday regarding the massive stimulus package currently working its way through Congress. While we don't normally post emails from activists, over the last few weeks I've received literally hundreds of great responses, all with messages and ideas that I think others would find interesting.

DC Unemployment Second Lowest in Country

Jobless claims reached a 26-year high last week according to government data released today.  Unemployment rates reached 7.2 percent in December and analysts expect that to increase.  Of course, the unemployment rates vary across the country.  The Washington, D.C. area, for example, has the second lowest rate for any metropolitan area at 4.7 percent.  Why could that be?
