FreedomWorks Issues a Key Vote Alert on Speaker Vote

  • Since Kevin McCarthy announced his candidacy for Speaker, FreedomWorks has urged him to work with the Freedom Caucus to ensure the 118th Congress operates in a deliberate, transparent, and accountable manner. Leader McCarthy’s proposed changes to House Rules represent a step in the right direction and an acknowledgement that the people’s House is broken.
  • Despite the progress made in his proposal, there are still important issues that need to be addressed. These include fully restoring the Motion to Vacate the Chair and considering major legislation under an “open rule” so each Representative is allowed to offer amendments on the House floor. These are measured changes that will help restore Americans’ trust in Congress.
  • FreedomWorks will oppose any Speaker nominee who does not support the full restoration of the Motion to Vacate the Chair or allow for members to amend major bills under an open rule. As we’ve said from the beginning, this Speaker vote is not about Kevin McCarthy or any other leadership hopeful, this vote is about allowing each Representative to represent his or her constituents in the legislative process.

FreedomWorks will count the vote for Speaker on our 2023 Congressional Scorecard and reserves the right to score any amendments, motions, or other related votes. The scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the FreedomFighter Award, which recognizes Members of the House and Senate who consistently vote to support economic freedom and individual liberty.
