FreedomWorks’ Member of the Month for December 2021: Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.)

FreedomWorks is excited to honor Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) as the member of the month for December 2021. He serves in the House of Representatives for Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional District, located in the south-central part of the state south of the capital city of Harrisburg.

The Big Picture

In 1980, Rep. Scott Perry began his military career as an enlistee in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. He advanced through the ranks, served in Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom, and after his return from Iraq, he was promoted to colonel in 2011.

Rep. Perry has continued his service to his home state and his country in Washington, where he confidently stands up for policies that protect taxpayers and carries through on principles that the Republican Party has consistently championed in its rhetoric but failed to follow through on. He holds a lifetime 94 percent score with FreedomWorks and routinely shines as one of the most consistently conservative members of Congress.

Last month Rep. Perry was elected as the new Chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, a group of lawmakers dedicated to constitutional principles and reducing the size of government. The House Freedom Caucus lives up to its reputation as the ‘conservative conscience of the Republican Conference’ by serving as the standard-bearer for the cause of limited and accountable government, pro-freedom policies, the Constitution, and the rule of law.

The Details

  • Rep. Perry has been a fierce critic of government overreach in the environmental sector, recognizing the burden it puts on states and businesses without any public safety benefit. As such, he has introduced and reintroduced the Energy Sovereignty Act, H.R. 1705, which would prohibit the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from requiring states to eliminate air pollution that is deemed to endanger public health in other countries.
  • While the rising cost of college tuition and increasing burden of student loans are on the minds of many Americans, Rep. Perry is proposing real solutions that don’t force working-class Americans to pay for someone’s liberal arts degree. The Student Loan Reform Act, H.R. 1586, would allow colleges and universities to cosign direct student loans. When these institutions are financially liable for the future of their students, they will be far more likely to invest in ensuring their students are adequately prepared for the job market. Enrollment in the program sends a clear signal from institutions to potential students that they care about their students’ futures and are willing to invest in them.

Why it Matters
