Reminiscent of the Green New Deal, the nearly 3,000 page America COMPETES Act is full of frivolous spending. The bill subsides the semiconductor industry to the tune of $52 billion, creates new federal grant programs, and establishes time-consuming, bureaucratic hurdles that could block industry leaders from doing business outside of the United States.
The bill also includes funding for radical environmentalist programs: $8 billion for the United Nations Green Climate Fund, $2 million in foreign aid to combat climate change, and $6 million to NOAA to create a National Coral Reef Management Fellowship.
Not to be outdone, the bill also includes several woke initiatives, including $5 million to create a Chief Diversity Officer at the National Science Foundation.
Finally, the bill creates a $45 billion slush fund to be used by labor unions and other political allies of the left.
This $250 billion bill is the definition of frivolous spending and does little to nothing to make gains against a rising China. Americans feel the burden of record inflation as prices rise on everything from gas to groceries. For any lawmaker to support the America COMPETES Act while our national debt surpasses $30 trillion is tone-deaf to Americans’ problems.
