Key Vote NO on the Community Services Block Grant Modernization Act, H.R. 5129

On behalf of FreedomWorks’ activist community, I urge you to contact your representative and ask him or her to vote NO on the Community Services Block Grant Modernization Act, H.R 5129, introduced by Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.).

The Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program provides funds to alleviate the causes and conditions of poverty in communities. Unfortunately, this legislation misses the mark at lifting people out of poverty.

The CSBG Modernization Act would reauthorize the program for ten years at an increased annual level of $1 billion for the first five years and would authorize “such sums as may be necessary for fiscal years 2028 through 2032.” The bill also increases the income eligibility threshold to 200 percent over the poverty line. This reform would permanently increase the income threshold from the disastrous CARES Act.

If Republicans are serious about addressing the inflation and government spending crises, they should vote against expanding this federal welfare program. Full stop. Rather than doubling down on misguided government programs, lawmakers should be moving to get programs like the CSBG off the books and focus on robust fiscal reform.

FreedomWorks will count the vote for H.R. 5129 on our 2022 Congressional Scorecard and reserves the right to score any amendments, motions, or other related votes. The scorecard determines eligibility for the FreedomFighter Award, which recognizes Members of the House and Senate who consistently vote to support economic freedom and individual liberty.

Sincerely,

Adam Brandon,
President, FreedomWorks
