Mandated Coverage in Massachusetts

Governor of Massachusetts and rumored presidential hopeful Mitt Romney’s health care reforms are no panacea to reduce the number of uninsured. A report by the Cato Institute points out that mandating that everyone be insured does not necessarily lead to everyone purchasing coverage and is difficult to enforce, as is evidenced from auto insurance markets in many states where some 14% of drivers are uninsured. As well, the report points out the slippery slope that Romney’s original, high-deductible no frills plan has undergone in state legislature, now requiring 40 mandated benefits be included in insurance policies.
