FreedomWorks Crashes AFL-CIO, Dem Rally

FreedomWorks staff and interns joined with Students for Saving Social Security on Capitol Hill today to crash a Leftist rally where politicians and labor unions demagogued the issue of Social Security, without offering a plan for reform or even coherent arguments.

The two free-market groups entered the Capitol Lawn with signs that read, “Personal Accounts Fix Social Security” and “Freedom Works.” The protestors were immediately confronted by the union members who seemed angry that dissenting voices were present.

The unions tried to block our signs and intimidate our staff, but to no avail. They created more attention for us than we could do alone. The media, spectators, Democrat politicians and union organizers all took notice of the commotion.

FreedomWorks staff were photographed and interviewed by a number of news organizations, and explained our stance on the issue: giving younger workers the choice to use the social security surplus funds for a personal account that they own and control.

We intercepted Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Harry Reid (D-NV) and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), and asked them to support personal accounts for younger workers. Press Secretary Adam Brandon also handed a copy of the FreedomWorks retirement security plan to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who did not seem too thrilled to hear our point of view.

The best arguments we heard all day included statements like these: “Have you ever worked a day in your life?” and “You are a Wall Street [expletive].” I must admit that I appreciated the irony of being called lazy and greedy in the same breath. For such a big rally you would think the union organizers would have better arguments.

Oh well. Facts never seem to get in the way of opinions.
