Spending on Initiative 884

The pro-Initiative 884 campaign is outspending the opposition by more than 140 to one, according to the state Public Disclosure Commission.

The League of Education Voters had raised more than $2.2 million in cash for its campaign by Oct. 8, with a contributor list that includes tens of thousands of dollars from the likes of Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his dad, Starbucks, Microsoft, and the statewide teachers union, the WEA. The campaign also lists more than $76,000 in in-kind contributions.

Some of 884’s opponents, such as the Evergreen Freedom Foundation, are targeting issues rather than the specific measure and are not required to file financial reports with the state Public Disclosure Commission.

The League of Freedom Voters listed $15,320 in cash contributions to its anti-884 campaign by Oct. 8, including $8,000 from Citizens for a Sound Economy, FreedomWorks’ parent organization, and $75 from Jim’s Plumbing. The group also noted $20,998.98 in in-kind contributions, all from Citizens for a Sound Economy.
