A Sales Tax in Oregon?

Some state legislators in Oregon are suggesting the state adopt a sales tax that will further harm an already crippled local economy. The tax would burden state citizens with an estimated $725 million in new taxes, reducing the state’s competitive edge and devastating border communities. Moreover, according to the Cascade Policy Institute, 30,000 jobs throughout the state could be lost.

As if that isn’t enough, members of the legislature have also proposed reducing the deductibility of federal income taxes from $3,500 to $3,000, a 20% across the board reduction in all the business tax credits, $100 million in new beer and wine taxes, and an increase in the Oregon alternate minimum corporate tax from $10 to a graduated scale.

Altogether, the legislature is considering $1.4 billion in new taxes. This is unacceptable! Legislators must cut wasteful spending, not levy additional taxes on citizens that simply cannot afford them.
