FreedomWorks for America Encourages Ron DeSantis Senate Run in Florida

Washington, DC – FreedomWorks for America encouraged Republican Congressman Ron DeSantis (FL-06) to run for U.S. Senate in Florida in the wake of Sen. Marco Rubio’s presidential announcement. Sen. Rubio declined to run for reelection for the U.S. Senate in 2016.

A veteran and Navy hero, Cong. DeSantis was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012. Over the past three years, he has proven himself to be a courageous fiscal conservative and defender of freedom. DeSantis has refused to be bullied into voting for bad legislation pushed by Republican leaders, voting against irresponsible debt limit increases and out-of-control budgets. DeSantis has a FreedomWorks lifetime score of 93 percent.

As a member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, DeSantis has stood out as a leader on government reform issues, sponsoring legislation to make sure congressional members do not receive special treatment. DeSantis’s bills include legislation to eliminate congressional pensions and a bill to force Congress to live by the laws it passes. In the spirit of practicing what he preaches, DeSantis voluntarily refused to accept his congressional pension and healthcare benefits. He is also the lead sponsor of legislation to end Congress’s unlawful exemption from Obamacare.

“With Senator Rubio declining to run for reelection, it is crucial that conservatives join together to replace Sen. Rubio with a committed conservative with the courage to fight for limited government and free-market principles,” said FreedomWorks for America spokesman Adam Brandon. “Cong. DeSantis is exactly the kind of courageous conservative we need in the U.S. Senate. DeSantis has been a leader on everything from government reform to eliminating Common Core regulations to ending Congress’s Obamacare exemption, and FreedomWorks activists hope he will run for the Senate in Florida.”
