Freedomworks Applauds Senate for Passage of the Motion to Instruct on H.R. 5895 Enhance Trade Oversight

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Freedomworks applauds the the Senate for adopting the motion to instruct on H.R. 5895 to enhance congressional oversight of trade. The adoption of this motion to instruct is a step in the right direction to reaffirm the constitutional duties of the legislative branch and ensure the separation of powers.

Jason Pye, FreedomWorks Vice President of Legislative Affairs, commented:

“Tariffs are taxes, and the Constitution makes trade a responsibility of Congress. It’s as simple as that. Today’s adoption of the motion to instruct on H.R. 5895 will help ensure Congress’ ability to protect American consumers from the harmful effects of protectionist tariffs.”

“Recent unilateral trade actions have already had a negative effect on the American economy. The trade actions will only add fuel to the fire of the trade war between the United States and other countries, leading to dramatic price increases for automobiles and raising the cost of shipping. Good on the Senate for putting its foot down and reminding the Trump administration of Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution.”
