FreedomWorks Offers Up Key Ways for Leader McCarthy and House Republicans to Hold Government Accountable

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to Leader McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) recent comment to his GOP colleagues that the failure to elect him as Speaker would “delay our ability to hold government accountable,” Adam Brandon, FreedomWorks President, commented:

“Eliminating earmarks would have been a great first step towards ‘holding government accountable.’”

Additional actions that would enable Leader McCarthy and House Republicans to better “hold government accountable” include: 

  • Mandate that legislative text be made available at least 72 hours ahead of a vote.
  • Eliminate the ability to suspend the debt ceiling without a standalone vote when the House adopts a budget resolution.
  • Reinstate the “Motion to Vacate the Chair.”
