FreedomWorks Opposes Kerry-Graham-Lieberman “American Power Act”

FreedomWorks will be engaging members nationwide to oppose the Kerry-Graham-Lieberman “American Power Act” cap and trade bill introduced in the Senate today.

The bill, assembled behind closed doors and available only to special interest lobbyists,  is packed full of favored industry giveaways and subsidies.   Little more than cap and trade in disguise, the bill would be a massive job-killing energy tax. In fact, it would be the largest tax hike in history, and would hit the poor and middleclass, who spend a higher proportion of their income on essentials like electricity and fuel, the hardest – when American families are already struggling to make ends meet in our current economic downturn.

Cap and trade will bring sky high energy prices for consumers and a new government slush fund for Washington. A twenty-seven cent “Fuels’ Fee” on every gallon of gasoline included in the bill means not just higher prices at the pump, but higher prices on shipping and food production.  Higher energy costs will put the cost of doing business through the roof and send American jobs overseas at a time of record unemployment.

To take on this new economy killer, FreedomWorks has re-launched its Cap and Trade Online War Room, full of important tools for free-market activists to contact their legislators through phone calls, emails, a petition, boots on the ground efforts, and current issue developments.

FreedomWorks’ over 900,000 members nationwide will be working hard to get out ahead of the bill, exposing the truth regarding this big government power grab, before the bill can gain traction in committee.  Already, FreedomWorks members in South Carolina have held simultaneous protests outside of Senator Graham’s (R-SC) district offices opposing the cap and trade scheme and can be credited for the Senator’s subsequent flip-flopping on the issue.

FreedomWorks President Matt Kibbe stated earlier, “It is vital to stop the Kerry-Graham-Lieberman cap and trade bill sooner rather than later when Senator Reid and Speaker Pelosi can start to use parliamentary tricks to bully and arm-twist this job killer through Congress.  FreedomWorks will be closely watching legislators’ votes on this important issue as the 2010 election season heats up.”
