FreedomWorks Statement in Response to DOJ’s Lawsuit Over Texas’ New Redistricting Map
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to the news that the Department of Justice has sued the Texas State Legislature over its new redistricting plan, Adam Brandon, FreedomWorks President, commented:
“Redistricting is an inherently partisan, political process. You cannot take the politics out of politics. But now that Republicans are getting good at redistricting and beating Democrats at their own game, Democrats are getting upset and want to drastically overhaul and federalize a process that has been left up to the state legislatures since the nation’s founding.
“Merrick Garland will claim that this lawsuit is about minority representation, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The ridiculous government overreach coming from the DOJ in the shape of this lawsuit is yet another case of Democrats trying to change the rules when they are no longer working to their advantage. Redistricting should be left up to state legislatures, as it is written in the Constitution.
“FreedomWorks activists will continue to advocate for the rights of state legislatures to draw their own legislative maps and expose this DOJ lawsuit for the predatory power grab that it is.”
