FreedomWorks Statement in Response to the Introduction of the Smart-on-Crime ED ACCESS Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to the introduction of the bipartisan, bicameral ED ACCESS Act by Sens. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Reps. David Schweikert (R-Ariz.) and Danny Davis (D-Ill.), Jason Pye, FreedomWorks Vice President of Legislative Affairs, commented:

“Simply put, the tax code is not the proper place to address drug policy. We are thrilled to see a strong bipartisan, bicameral group in Congress willing to both acknowledge this and take steps to reverse one of the many poorly-thought-out drug policies of the 1990s.

“Breaking down barriers to reentry, especially for drug offenders, is essential to reducing crime rates and lowering the taxpayer burden of incarceration. The ED ACCESS Act builds on the smart-on-crime wave that is sweeping the nation, prioritizing public safety and effective justice.”
