FreedomWorks Statement in Response to New Mexico SB 8

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to the so-called “Voters’ Rights Provision” (SB 8) in the New Mexico legislature, Adam Brandon, FreedomWorks President, commented:

“New Mexico’s SB 8 is just the most recent attempt by Democrats to weaken electoral safeguards under the guise of ‘ballot access.’ The bill will require same-day voter registration, requires the government to provide resources in order to help convicted felons vote, creates a permanent absentee voter list, and takes $20 million from the early childhood education and care fund and moves it into the state election fund. This bill also does nothing to clean up outdated voter rolls.”

“SB 8 contains a host of bad ideas for election integrity that Democrats have already tried–and failed–to pass nationally. This bill will be a disaster for New Mexico and will only serve to undermine citizens’ faith in our electoral institutions.”
