FreedomWorks Statement in Response to Senate Cloture Vote on the Motion to Proceed to the “For the People Act”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to the Senate’s vote this evening pertaining to S.2093, the so-called “For the People Act,” Adam Brandon, FreedomWorks President, commented:

“Just days ago, Sen. Joe Manchin gave the nation his word that he was opposed to the so-called ‘For the People Act’ on the grounds that it did not secure America’s elections, an issue with which an overwhelming majority of Americans are concerned — and rightfully so.

“Sen. Manchin’s vote to advance the bill, which has been only minorly altered, calls into question the West Virginia senator’s motives. Is he truly concerned with preserving election integrity, or merely engaging in politics as usual to increase his standing with Majority Leader Chuck Schumer?

“The ‘For the People Act,’ despite the recent minor revisions, still amounts to a major Democratic power grab in Washington to the detriment of American voters from both sides of the aisle. It certainly does not secure our elections.

“The legislation puts our electoral system at risk and would expose individual Americans to harassment for their political beliefs. It is no wonder that the ACLU, as well as many West Virginians, oppose this flawed, deceptive piece of legislation meant simply to entrench Democrats’ rule of Washington.”

In recent weeks, FreedomWorks’ grassroots activist community has driven more than 467,100 messages, 45,000 calls, and over 70,000 petition signatures in opposition to the so-called “For the People Act.”
