FreedomWorks Statement in Response to Senate Hearing Examining D.C. Statehood

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee is holding a hearing to examine D.C. statehood. Adam Brandon, FreedomWorks President, commented:
“From packing the Supreme Court, to passing the ‘Corrupt Politicians’ Act, to making D.C. a state, leftists in Congress are adamant about taking full control of our democratic institutions. Democrats want to make the District of Columbia a state for one reason and one reason alone: power.

“Like a lot of Democrat-led bills, it’s very likely that their legislative effort to make D.C. a state is unconstitutional. Further, when one considers the historical precedent of retroceding residential land back from the District, the effort is also unnecessary to secure full voting representation for the residents of Washington, D.C. in Congress.

“That’s why FreedomWorks supports ‘making D.C. Maryland again’ and giving the people in the District full representation. We urge Senate Republicans to hold the line and continue to fend off the partisan bills and leftist agenda that continue to threaten our republic.”
