FreedomWorks is proud to announce that our bill of the month for September 2020 is the Separation of Powers Restoration Act (SOPRA),H.R. 7895 and S. 909, introduced by Rep. Kelly Armstrong (R-N.D.) in the House and Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) in the Senate. SOPRA seeks to restore the proper separation of powers by eliminating judicial deference to bureaucratic agencies’ interpretation of laws.
President Donald Trump suggested on Wednesday that he has the constitutional authority to adjourn Congress. The suggestion has been, unsurprisingly, panned by the media and legal scholars. The Constitution does actually provide some authority here, but the authority has never been used, leaving more questions than answers.
On behalf of FreedomWorks’ activist community, I urge you to contact your representative and urge him or her to cosponsor the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act, H.R. 3972, if they haven’t already done so. Introduced by Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wisc.), the REINS Act would reaffirm the legislative branch’s Article I authority by requiring that economically significant rules be approved through a joint resolution of Congress before they can take effect.

Introduced by Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.), S. 2356 seeks to make permanent changes to the Obama-era Clean Water Rule, solidifying changes made by the Trump administration limiting the scope of the Clean Water Act.
